Whether you’re looking for a naturally hydrating drink or just craving a taste of Mexico, this is a must-try!

What is Agua de Jamaica?

Agua de Jamaica (pronounced ha-MY-kah) is a traditional Mexican hibiscus tea made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers in hot water, then sweetening and chilling it. It’s often found at Mexican restaurants, street markets, and family gatherings. The flavor is slightly tart, similar to cranberry juice, and can be enjoyed sweetened or unsweetened, depending on your preference.

Why I Love Agua de Jamaica

Growing up, agua de Jamaica was always a staple in our home. It’s one of those drinks that reminds me of family meals, warm afternoons, and the vibrant flavors of our Mexican culture. I love how refreshing it is, especially on a hot day, and the fact that it’s a healthier alternative to sugary sodas.

Plus, it’s so easy to make! With just dried hibiscus flowers, water, and a little sweetener, you can have a delicious homemade drink that’s way better than store-bought juices.

How to Make Agua de Jamaica at Home

Making agua de Jamaica is super simple and requires just a few ingredients. Here’s my go-to recipe:

Ingredients:

• 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (flor de Jamaica)

• 8 cups water (divided)

• ¼ to ½ cup sugar, honey, or sweetener of choice (adjust to taste)

• Ice

Instructions:

1️⃣ Boil the water – In a pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

2️⃣ Add hibiscus flowers – Stir in the dried hibiscus flowers and let them simmer for about 5 minutes.

3️⃣ Steep – Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.

4️⃣ Strain – Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the flowers.

5️⃣ Dilute and sweeten – Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water and sweeten to taste.

6️⃣ Serve – Pour over ice, enjoy!

Tips for the Best Agua de Jamaica:

• Adjust sweetness – Some like it tart, others prefer it sweeter. Start with a little sweetener and adjust to your taste.

• Make it sparkling – Try adding sparkling water for a fizzy twist!

• Experiment with flavors – Add a cinnamon stick, ginger, or even a splash of orange juice for extra depth.

Agua de Jamaica is more than just a drink—it’s a taste of Mexico that brings back so many memories for me. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing summer beverage or a healthy alternative to sugary drinks, this hibiscus tea is a fantastic choice.
