Visiting Nerja with Kids: 10 Family-Friendly Activities & Tips

Visiting Nerja, Spain with Kids: A Family-Friendly Adventure

Nerja, a charming coastal town on the Costa del Sol, is a perfect destination for families looking for a mix of beach fun, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures. With its stunning beaches, famous caves, and kid-friendly activities, Nerja offers something for everyone. If you’re planning a family trip to this beautiful Andalusian gem, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit with kids. Also, this is my current favorite beach town of Andalucia!

1. Explore the Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja)

One of Nerja’s biggest attractions is the Cuevas de Nerja, a fascinating underground world filled with prehistoric cave paintings, massive stalactites, and stalagmites. Kids will love the adventure of walking through the caves, imagining the people who lived there thousands of years ago. The pathways are well-lit and easy to navigate, making it accessible for families with young children.

Mami Tip: Buy tickets online in advance to skip the long lines, and bring a light jacket as it can be cool inside the caves.

2. Enjoy the Beaches

Nerja is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in southern Spain, and many are great for kids.

Burriana Beach – The most popular family-friendly beach in Nerja, Burriana has calm waters, lifeguards, and plenty of beachfront restaurants (chiringuitos) where you can grab some fresh seafood while the kids play.

Playa Carabeillo – A smaller, quieter beach with shallow waters, ideal for little ones.

Playa de Maro – Perfect for families who love snorkeling! The crystal-clear waters are full of marine life, making it a great spot for kids to explore.

Mami Tip: Bring a beach umbrella and plenty of sunscreen, as the Spanish sun can be strong, even in the cooler months.

3. Visit the Balcón de Europa

The Balcón de Europa is an iconic viewpoint in Nerja that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a great place for kids to run around, enjoy an ice cream from one of the local shops, and watch street performers. Parents will love the stunning scenery, while kids will enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Mami Tip: Visit at sunset for the best views and a perfect family photo opportunity!

4. Take a Boat or Kayak Tour

For adventurous families, renting a kayak or taking a boat tour along the coast is a fantastic way to explore Nerja from the sea. Paddle along the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, discovering hidden caves and waterfalls along the way. Most tour companies offer life jackets for kids and have guided tours suitable for beginners.

Mami Tip: Book your tour in advance, especially in peak season (June–September), as they tend to fill up quickly.

5. Stroll Through the Old Town

Nerja’s Old Town is full of charm, with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and beautiful flower-filled balconies. Take a leisurely stroll with your kids and stop at one of the many cafés for a sweet treat like churros con chocolate. There are also plenty of souvenir shops where little ones can pick out a fun keepsake.

6. Visit the Aquavelis Water Park (Vélez-Málaga)

If you’re visiting in the summer and need a break from the beach, Aquavelis Water Park in nearby Vélez-Málaga is a hit with kids of all ages. It features slides, wave pools, and splash areas for toddlers, making it a great family-friendly day trip from Nerja.

Mami Tip: Arrive early to secure a good spot with shade, and bring water shoes to protect little feet from hot surfaces.

7. Explore the Río Chíllar Walk (For Older Kids)

For families with older kids who enjoy hiking, the Río Chíllar walk is a must-do. This scenic trail follows a shallow river through canyons and waterfalls, where kids can splash in the water as they hike. It’s an unforgettable outdoor adventure, but be sure to wear water shoes and bring plenty of snacks and water.

Mami Tip: Avoid hiking during peak summer heat, and start early in the morning for a more comfortable experience.

8. Try Traditional Spanish Food

Nerja has plenty of family-friendly restaurants where you can introduce your kids to delicious Spanish cuisine. Some great options include:

Ayo’s – Famous for its giant paellas, cooked over an open fire right on the beach. It’s a casual, kid-friendly spot where children can play in the sand while you enjoy your meal.

El Pulguilla – A great place to try fresh seafood and tapas in a relaxed setting.

La Dama – A popular Italian restaurant in case your little ones prefer pizza or pasta.

9. Take a Day Trip to Frigiliana

Just a 15-minute drive from Nerja, Frigiliana is a beautiful white-washed village that looks like something out of a storybook. Strolling through its winding streets is a fun and relaxing way to spend a morning, and there are plenty of cafés and artisan shops to explore. Kids will love spotting the donkeys that sometimes roam the village! For a kid-friendly daytrip itinerary, check out my blog post: Exploring Frigiliana with Kids: What to See & Do.
