Cinco de Mayo Kid Friendly!

Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico winning a battle against France in Puebla, oddly enough, in Mexico it is not as widely celebrated as here in the US. I however, welcome any excuse to celebrate so we did a little simple Cinco de Mayo celebration with Tamales and Mexican-inspired deserts and decoration.

First off, since the pandemic, there has been a flower shortage and flower prices have skyrocketed! No worries though, our neighborhood Florist at Diana’s Flowers always gives a great discount! Watch out for mother’s day weekend though!

The decor was simple, we used a red “rebozo” (a shawl) as a runner. A beautiful bouquet that included sunflowers. And delicious Mexican-inspired donuts from our neighborhood donut shop that just opened this weekend DONAS!

The main dish? Tamales of course! We had red mole, green salsa with pork meat and “Sordos” plain for Stacy.

Stacy had the most fun leading up to Cinco De Mayo, she got to bake and decorate and do fun projects! Here are all the fun, kid-friendly ideas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo all done by my 5-year old!

Pop Corn

At our house, we make popcorn on Sundays and watch a Disney+ episode of our fave’ show or a movie, and on special occasions, we add some food coloring and make it festive, here is the Cinco De Mayo version!

White Chocolate dipped Strawberries

We had some strawberries leftover from the weekend’s waffles toppings and decided to melt some white chocolate and used green food coloring for the sugar! Stacy had so much fun making these yummy treats!

Sombrero Cookies

This was so nostalgic, I loved Marias cookies when I was a kid and they taste delicious along with some rice pudding (not pictured here because we ate it before I even thought about photographing it). A little white frosting, sprinkles and dots for the top part of the hat!

This is a classic Mexican-Party must have. Its the Gelatina de Leche (milk jello) Mosaico! We used La Lechera products for the milk jello and green and red Jello brands!

Churro cupcakes

We love churros and we love cupcakes but didn’t feel like making churros so… this was a great way to have churros and cupcakes! We used cinnamon flavored cake mix and added a little vanilla extract and cinammon! Melted butter and a sugar and cinamon mix!

Toilet Paper Roll mini Piñatas!

This was a fun project for Stacy! Super easy and kept her busy for at least an hour. She loves recycling so leading up to Cinco de Mayo, she was helpful recycling the rolls and asking Grandma and Grandpa to do the same. Colorful tissue paper, scissors and glue!

Do you celebrate Cinco De Mayo? What did you do?
