Nuestra invitada, Katia López, es salvadoreña / hondureña de 29 años nacida en El Salvador. Se mudó a los EE. UU. Cuando tenía 11 años para vivir con su tía y tío, y fue un gran choque cultural ya que no hablaba el idioma. Fue muy difícil adaptarse a un país y una cultura diferentes y no hablar el idioma, pero ella trabajó para salir de su zona de confort y superar sus miedos. Fue a la escuela, tomó clases de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma) rodeada de personas que solo hablaban inglés y trabajó para aprender inglés. Fue un desafío crecer y adaptarse a una cultura diferente, sin embargo, todos los obstáculos y dificultades que experimentó la hicieron más fuerte y se convirtieron en la persona que es hoy.
La razón por la que decidió involucrarse en el campo financiero es porque quiere ayudar y retribuir a su comunidad. El dinero es un gran problema en el extranjero en casi todos los hogares y es importante para nosotros ser educados e informados sobre todos los recursos que tenemos disponibles en este país. Katia proviene de un entorno muy pobre en el que se le enseña a comenzar a trabajar a una edad muy temprana para ayudar a proporcionar una comida en la mesa y, aunque muchas veces no tuvieron suficiente, pudieron sobrevivir. Fue criada por su abuela cuando era niña y siempre la ayudó a trabajar. Aprendió a cocinar algunas comidas en un restaurante cercano, lavaba platos, lavaba y planchaba la ropa de otras personas y cualquier cosa que pudieran hacer para ganar dinero y poner comida en su mesa. Katia está agradecida de haber aprendido estos valores a una edad muy temprana, ya que la ha convertido en la mujer que es hoy y también está transmitiendo estos grandes valores a sus hijos.
Este país es la tierra de las oportunidades y Katia quiere ayudar a su comunidad y compartir todo el conocimiento que ha adquirido para ayudar a una madre, un padre, una tía, un tío o una familia que actualmente está luchando, atravesando dificultades o siente que no hay fin o salida. Existen muchos recursos que pueden ayudarnos incluso para familias inmigrantes como ella que vinieron a este país para una vida mejor y mejores oportunidades. Es importante para todos nosotros estar informados de todas las formas en que podemos proteger a nuestras familias y cómo construir un futuro mejor para nuestra próxima generación.
Algunos de los conceptos que Katia enseña en su comunidad es cómo construir y proteger nuestra casa financiera, ya que una de nuestras principales preocupaciones en cada hogar es el dinero, ya sea por no tener suficiente dinero o por buscar formas de conservar más del dinero que ganamos. Katia es madre ahora y sabe que puede ser muy difícil hacer malabarismos con un trabajo / carrera, cuidar a nuestros hijos, nuestro hogar y al mismo tiempo asegurarse de que nuestras finanzas estén en orden. No estamos solos y este país tiene recursos que pueden ayudarnos a aliviar esas preocupaciones. Está agradecida de estar en este campo y de poder ayudar y retribuir a cada familia que pueda ayudar.

Our guest, Katia Lopez, is 29 years old Salvadoran / Honduran born in El Salvador. She moved to the US when she was 11 years old to live with her aunt and uncle and it was a big culture shock as she didn’t speak the language. It was very difficult to adapt to a different country and culture and not speaking the language but she worked on getting out of her comfort zone and overcoming her fears. She went to school, took ESL classes (English as a Second Language) surrounded herself with people who only spoke English and worked on learning to become a good English speaker. It was challenging to grow and adapt to a different culture, however all the obstacles and hardships she experienced made her stronger and into the person she is today.
The reason she decided to be involved in the financial field is because she wants to help and give back to her community. Money is a big issue abroad in almost every household and it is important for us to be educated and be informed on all the resources that are available to us in this country. Katia comes from a very poor background where you are taught to start working at a very young age to help provide a meal at the table and although a lot times they didn’t have enough, they were able to get by. She was raised by her grandmother as a child and always helped her work. She learned to cook some meals at a nearby restaurant, washed dishes, washed and ironed other people’s clothes and anything they could do to make money and put food on their table. Katia is grateful to have learned these values at a very young age as it has made her into the woman she is today and is passing these great values to her children as well.
This country is the land of opportunities and Katia wants to help her community and share all the knowledge she has gained to help a mother, a father, aunt, uncle or a family that is currently struggling, going through hardships or feels like there is no end or way out. There are many resources out there that can help us even for immigrant families like herself who came to this country for a better life and better opportunities. It is important for all of us to be informed in all the ways we can protect our families, and how to build a better future for our next generation.
Some of the concepts that Katia teaches in her community is how to build and protect our financial house as one of our main concerns in every household is money either by not having enough of it or by looking for ways to keep more of the money we make. Katia is a mother now and it can be very hard juggling with a job/career, taking care of our children, our home and at the same time making sure our finances are in order. We are not alone and this country has resources that can help us ease those concerns. She is grateful and thankful to be in this field and to be able to help and give back to every family that she can help.
