Experience Cómpeta’s Noche del Vino Festival

This year we got to experience Cómpeta’s annual “Noche del Vino” (during the daytime activities). They gave us attendees cute little themed hats and fans because it gets HOT!

We had been to this whitewashed village of Cómpeta, Spain, nestled in the mountains, before but had not explored it. Cómpeta is such a picturesque town and we loved exploring it! Originally, I thought I was going to get to stomp the grapes to make the wine I’d later be drinking, silly me, that part is left to the professionals! Nonetheless, I was super excited to get to experience this wonderful tradition that belongs to the incredible locals who keep it alive. This ancient ritual marks the start of the wine-making season, blending history, culture, and community in one unforgettable night.

“Noche del Vino”, celebrated annually on August 15th in Cómpeta, Spain, is a vibrant festival that honors the region’s rich wine-making heritage. This event marks the traditional farewell to farm laborers heading to the vineyards for the grape harvest, a practice dating back to its start in 1973. Recognized as a “Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional” in 1999, it attracts both locals and tourists alike.

The festivities kick off with a lively procession featuring traditional music, leading to the Plaza Vendimia where the ceremonial grape treading takes place. This joyful event sees participants stomping on freshly harvested grapes, symbolizing the start of the wine production season.

Throughout the day, visitors can explore a medieval market filled with crafts, local delicacies, and free tastings of Competa wine, particularly the Muscatel variety known for its unique flavor profile. The culinary highlight includes migas,a traditional dish made from breadcrumbs, garlic, and olive oil.

As night falls, Plaza Almijara transforms into a stage for flamenco performances and live music, creating an electric atmosphere that lasts until dawn. “Noche del Vino” is not just a celebration of wine; it’s a communal gathering that encapsulates the spirit of Andalusian culture and tradition. Following, a Guide for when you visit and experience “Noche del Vino” in Cómpeta!
