If you’re looking for a picturesque and family-friendly getaway just a short drive from Málaga, Frigiliana is the perfect destination. Nestled in the mountains of the Costa del Sol, often hailed as one of Spain’s most beautiful white-washed villages. Getting There
Frigiliana is approximately a 50-minute drive from Málaga, making it an easy day trip. While public transportation is available, renting a car offers flexibility, especially when traveling with children. The drive provides scenic views of the Costa del Sol, setting the tone for your adventure. There are also group excursions that bus you there but I find it easier to explore alone when traveling with kids than adhering to a group’s schedule.
Exploring the Village
- Moorish-Mudéjar Quarter: Begin your journey in the historic heart of Frigiliana. The cobblestone streets are lined with white-washed houses adorned with colorful flower pots. Kids will enjoy spotting the intricate mosaics that depict the village’s rich history.
- Calle del Peñón: This picturesque street leads to the “Vista Panorámica,” offering breathtaking views of the village, surrounding mountains, and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. It’s an excellent spot for family photos.

- Frigiliana Tours: If you’re looking for a guided experience, Frigiliana Tours is fantastic with kids! Their knowledgeable guides bring the town’s history to life in a fun and engaging way that keeps both little ones and adults entertained.
- Hiking: For active families, the “El Fuerte” trail offers a moderate hike with rewarding panoramic views. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months.

- Lunch at Plaza 45: Situated in the heart of Frigiliana, Plaza 45 offers a delightful dining experience with a menu that caters to both adults and children. The outdoor seating provides a charming ambiance, perfect for a family meal. Per usual, I ordered a burger and it was soooo tasty!!!
- Merienda at Café Almijara: For an afternoon treat, Café Almijara is a must-visit. This cozy café offers delicious homemade pastries, cakes, and refreshing drinks—perfect for an afternoon merienda (Spanish snack time). Kids will love their sweet treats while parents enjoy a relaxing coffee. You can also enjoy amazing views from there.
Tips for Visiting with Kids
- Timing: The village’s narrow streets can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon can provide a more relaxed experience.
- Footwear: The cobblestone streets and hilly terrain mean comfortable, sturdy shoes are essential.
- Hydration and Snacks: While there are numerous cafes and restaurants, carrying water and small snacks is advisable, especially if you’re exploring with younger children.
- Stroller Access: Due to the steep and narrow streets, maneuvering a stroller can be challenging. A baby carrier might be more practical for infants and toddlers.

- Nerja: Just a short drive away, Nerja offers beautiful beaches and the famous Nerja Caves. It’s a great addition to your itinerary if you’re spending multiple days in the area. Nerja is one of my favorite, if I could choose where to live, it would be right on the beach in Nerja.
