  18. Listo! Disfruta!

This week I had a pregnancy craving, the potato balls filled with meat from Portos !!!

So last night, I made them for the first time. I found several recipes and out of three recipes I invented one to which I added and removed because due to the quarantine, we have not gone out much to buy groceries and I was missing some of the ingredients, also to make them much simpler.

After many requests for the recipe, here you have it. Note, this recipe is the easy and fast version, there are other recipes surely more authentic to the Cuban flavor and also, mine is Mexican style.

Ingredients:

  • 6 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • water (to boil the potatoes)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup of seasoned breadcrumbs Or if you don’t have it, what I used was 1 cup of ground saltine crackers
  • enough oil to fry OR for healthier, use your air frier
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 can of chipotle sauce with whole chili (this is what I used instead of the Cuban recipe) because it was easier, faster and tasted more Mexican.
  • 1 lb ground ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • salt and pepper to taste / meat seasoning
  • 1/2 cup flour

Steps:

  1. Boil the potatoes in water and salt.
  2. Meanwhile, use a little oil to sauté the onion and garlic.
  3. Add the ground meat, seasoned with meat or salt and pepper to taste and mix until the meat is cooked well.
  4. Add the can of chipotle with the whole chilies, cook and mix. Set it aside when done.
  5. Drain the potatoes as once they have boiled and are tender enough to mash well.
  6. Add the butter and mash the potatoes until a pure mass is made. Let it cool. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
  7. Beat the two eggs in a plate.
  8. Put the flour on another plate
  9. Put the breadcrumbs on another plate
  10. Separate the potato mash into small balls. I made them big because we really like meat.
  11. Flatten a bit (like an omelette) and put the meat inside (like a taco) and seal the potato balls with the same potato mash, making the balls again one by one.
  12. Take the stuffed potato balls one by one and cover them with flour.
  13. Take the stuffed potato balls one by one and cover them with the beaten egg mixture.
  14. Take the stuffed potato balls one by one and spread them with the breadcrumbs.
  15. Once it’s all done, add enough oil to fry over high-medium heat.
  16. When the oil is very hot, fry the balls making sure they fry well on all sides.
  17. Dry the stuffed potato balls from excess oil and let them cool slightly.
  18. Ready! Enjoy!

If you cook them, send me a message about how they turned out! Or if you have other suggestions, comment below! Bon Appetite!
